Seminary Days

[Don & Ruth Hustad, Danette with Sweetie - the Hustad's dog & Bryce & Doris Finch; the Hustads with Gay & Randy]

It was wonderful for Danette, Gay and Randy to have time for an evening catching up with their former professor. They got together at the home of Dr. Don and Ruth Hustad. Don was the former long time organist for the Billy Graham Crusade and a favorite professor of both Danette and Randy. Also present was Bryce and Doris Finch. Bryce was the former photographer for the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board and Doris was a long time secretary for the School of Church Music at Southern. If Doris looks vaguely familiar to some of us Hawaii folk, it might be because she is sister to Lurie, Dr. Edmond Walker's wife!

Bement, Illinois

After Chie, Etsuko and Noriko left, the rest of us (Gay, Randy, Ethel, Danette, Liliko and Hae) packed up the van and headed for Bement (rhymes with cement) Illinois. I know, you're wondering why Bement? Let me tell you a story to introduce you to this very special place. But it starts a while back... to the time when (as Randy would say) he had more hair and was a tad thinner. He met a young woman (no, I'm not going to tell you the story of how he met Gay, you'll have to ask him yourself for that one yourself) who was a teacher from Illinois, spending her summer in Hawaii taking some education courses to improve her teaching skills. Well, this young woman loved Hawaiian music - and so Randy would take Donna Sharp and her friends around to the various clubs. This became an annual event ... she especially like our Ilikai member, Noly Paa!

Now fast forward a number of years and Andrew is going off to college. As a mother, when your child goes off to college, you look forward to winter break as it means they're coming home. Well, Andrew announces to Gay and Randy that he isn't coming home. Instead, he has planned on attending a Christian conference in Champagne-Urbana. Now as parents in ministry - Gay and Randy are used to traveling - so they decide that if Andrew isn't coming home - they'd go to Illinois and spend some time with him there! Time to call their long time friend Donna. And wouldn't you know it, Bement is only a stone's throw away from Champagne-Urbana. They could stay at her house and would they consider singing at her church, First Presbyterian Church? Thus, the Hongos met Pastor Marsha Frederick and sang for their Christmas Eve service. Despite the freezing cold (only a mother's love prevented Gay from getting back on that plane when she got outside and saw her breath!), they had a wonderful time with Donna, spent the holidays with Andrew, and fell in love with the church. Gay says that it was so beautiful singing on Christmas Eve, with the snow falling gently outside - picture postcard perfect!

Now fast forward to 2007 - Louisville is only a 5.5 hour drive away ... so how could we come all this way and not stop in to see this great community! We started our Bement segment with a delicious dinner at the Beach House - celebrating Pastor Marsha's birthday (don't worry, your age is safe with us), then some singing and dancing at the Pastor's house. The next day, we started with a visit to Barbara's mother, Adra, in an assisted living facility. There one of the residents told us, I've always wanted to go to Hawaii and now Hawaii has come to me. Then a concert at the church. And here again, we were blessed by old friends Lawrence and Helen Mercades, former residents of Maui - who drove all the way from Chicago to see us. Not only did they drive 4 hours, but Helen thought we'd be missing rice by now and so made rice, chicken stew and dessert; and even crocheted leis for all of us! So after the concert, everyone enjoyed Helen's food and the ono pizzas provided by the church. As you can imagined, we thoroughly loved our time in Bement and are so thankful for the members of First Presbyterian Church for their warmth and hospitality!

Campbellsville Baptist Church

At each of our concerts, we were amazed and blessed by friends who made the effort to come see us. The concert at Campbellsville was no exception. The Eatons, former members of Kahului Baptist Church, now living in Atlanta, were one such couple who made the trip to see us.

Adopted Families

[sign at Bethlehem Baptist Church; beautiful sanctuary - arch was designed by Jim]

[after Sunday morning service with Jim & Shirley]

Not only were we blessed with a home away from home with Jim and Shirley Taliaferro (in fact when we returned from a concert, we'd yell out - Mom/Dad, we're home!"), but we had the honor of participating in their morning worship service at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Their sanctuary is so beautiful that it was a very worshipful experience for all of us. It was there that Danette got to catch up with Brent Fryrear, who was only in 9th grade when Danette was in seminary.

[Brent Fryrear, Danette and Elvin; Ray & Joanne Fryrear with Master's Touch & Gay after their concert at Shelbyville]

Speaking of adopted families ... this trip was a time to catch up with old friend who were like family to Danette and Gay and Randy. Ray and Joanne Fryrears were Danette's adoped family while she was at seminary. They included Danette, right along with their 3 children in their family! A wonderful story that Danette shared with us about this family's love is the bicycle story. Danette rode a bicycle back and forth from her apartment to seminary. Unfortunately it got stolen. The Fryrears attended a Catholic church/school bazaar in their town. The top raffle of the day was a bicycle. So each Fryrear bought a raffle ticket and on the back of each ticket, they all wrote Danette's name. And when it was time - can you guess who's name was pulled on the winning raffle ticket? You are soooo smart! Yes, the back of the raffle ticket said "Danette".

[Edwina & Danette; Betty Jackson, daughter Mary Ann - the Hongos adopted mother]

If Ray and Joanne were Danette's adopted parents, Edwina Rowell was Danette's adopted sister. When Danette was attending college at Oklahoma Baptist, Cliff Hoff introduced her to Sharon Kaneshiro, a member of University Avenue Baptist Church, who was also attending OBU. When Danette expressed interest in Southern, Sharon said that she knew someone in Kentucky because this woman had been a summer missionary in the early 70's at UABC. So instead of heading off to Palm Spring (the destination of choice for most college students), Sharon and Danette headed to Kentucky, to the home of Edwina. An instant friendship developed and they have been friends - through Danette's seminary days, through Edwina and Larry's (her husband) work as missionaries for the Foreign Mission Board to the Ivory Coast, in Africa, and now while they serve at Campellsville Baptist Church. Edwina currently teaches English as a Second Language classes at Campbellsville University and Larry just resigned his position as Minister of Education to pursue a degree in Journalism. In fact, it was Edwina who introduced Danette to Gay & Randy!

Betty Jackson was Randy & Gay's adopted mother while they were in seminary. Adopted mothers come in very handy, especially as Andrew was born in Kentucky ... all new mothers know the value of an experience mother!

Non Church Visits

Our travels took us not only to churches, but also to senior centers, assisted living facilities and private residences. This was an amazing trip as it was not so much as a concert tour with the wonderfully talented Hongos, rather a trip of ministry (and let me tell you, it was great dancing for them - tho' if I were the confessing type I'd confess that I messed up a few times since I got so caught up in the beauty of their song that I forgot about my dancing - good thing everyone was so forgiving!). We had a number of unexpected performances. We would learn that someone wanted to attend one of the concerts, but was now in an assisted living facility or bed bound at home. We'd look at one another and say ... who needs to go shopping? Let's go dance at their home. Who needs to go sight seeing? Let's go dance at the assisted living facility. Some of us may never be in Kentucky again (tho' that would definitely be a sad thing as everyone was so gracious and generous - and great huggers!), but serving our Lord through song and dance was more important ... spending time with a loved one of one of our new friends was more important, doing the Lord's work was more important. And we can each tell howthese private/impromptu concerts touched our lives as much as those for whom we performed.

[Danette with Rayberta Ray at Treyton Oak Towers; Danette with Cindy Weber former professor and the only female Southern Baptist Pastor that we know]

Some of you may remember Hermon Ray, Rayberta's husband, who was long time pastor at Waikiki Baptist Church and was loved by many. Danette went to seminary with Cindy's husband - Robert Owens Junior. His father was the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Hawaii, immediately before Dan Chun. Danette met Robert at Southern when they were both taking classes in Social Work. In the course of their conversation, Robert mentioned that he would be working with Cindy. Danette told Robert that Cindy was great, as Danette had had classes with her and that he would absolutely love her. Well, needless to say, they did love working together and the rest, as they say, is history ;-)

[Chie with Louise Elliot; Lou Sherman]

[Gay teaching Pearly Shells to some of the leaders at Oasis; group photo after our performance at Oasis]

If anyone reading these blog entries find errors, especially in my identification of people and photos, please let me know as I am the world's worst name person (do you know that I had aspirations of being a teacher, but this lack of remembering names crushed that hope!). It is amazing that people leave the comfort of their homes and families to travel half-way around the world in service for the Lord! That was the case with Mary's husband's aunt - Laura Cornwell, who helped start our Hawaii Baptist Academy. So it would be fitting that Chie, who currently teaches there would take a picture with Mary.

When Danette arrived in Louisville before the rest of the group, Lou's wife, Mozelle, a former professor of Danette's was very helpful in making sure Danette had all the routes to get to all the various churches and other locations. And while Mozelle was helping Danette, Lou and his grandson was house-sitting Danette's home in Kaimuki. Lou came to see us at the Oasis, a senior program of the Walnut Street Baptist Church.

[Juanita Green's assisted living facility - Juanita is in the center; and with Buell Noffsinger at his home]

Juanita was like a second mother to Randy and Gay while they were at seminary. Even in those day, these two were performing and so after a performance, Juanita would be there to slip a few dollars into their pocket to help them with their expenses. Randy shared with Juanita that he and Gary were continuing that tradition, helping current seminary students - due to the influence that Juanita had on their lives. And for all of you HBA folks, you also already know that Juanita has been a long time supporter of HBA too! It was fun dancing, singing and sharing with Juanita's friends at Crestview - especially as these residents are in the twilight of their lives and for an hour, we could share the sunshine of Hawaii, but more importantly the sunshine of God's love.

Buell is one of Shirley Taliaferro's long time friends. When we heard of his disappointment of not being able attend service at Bethlehem Baptist Church when we performed, everyone agreed that before some of Master's Touch left for home, we would do one more performance. So we did, complete with several costume changes. Special appreciations to Betty, his wife, Debby - daughter, and Mary Nell - sister for allowing us this opportunity to minister. When you dance so up close and personal, while there isn't thunderous applause, the quiet look of appreciation is almost more powerful. And when we were left, we had a sense of God speaking to us ... "well done, my good and faithful servant."

Our Friends at the Kentucky Baptist Convention

During our trip, we wrote about our visit to the Kentucky Baptist Convention (see earlier posting "Kentucky Baptist Convention"). At that time, these photos were not yet downloaded from our cameras. Now who was it that said "a picture paints a thousand words..."? (ah, the problems of brain cells disappearing - hmmm, wonder where they go?) Anyway, as there are so many connections between Kentucky and Hawaii Baptists, here are some photos to bring back the memories.

[Eileen showing group around new building under construction; beam of new building]

On our way to visit Haven of Rest (see related information about Eileen and Haven of Rest as part of the "Otter Creek-Day Two" posting), we stopped in to meet and thank Dawn and Tonya, two of the women who - along with Eileen - lead Bible Study at Otter Creek. Due to their work schedule, they were not able to attend our presentation, so we went to them. How wonderful to meet these women, who take time from their busy lives to minister to strangers in prison. Eileen gave us a tour of the new facility under construction, that will be able to house many more families as they come to visit their loved ones at the Kentucky Federal Penitentiary. It was quite moving to see Bible versus that the construction volunteers had written on the beams of the new facilities. This building will definitely be girded by the everlasting word of our God! The beam pictured above has written: "The grass withers and the flowers fades, but the word of our God lasts forever." Isaiah 40:8
